How to Calm Vaginal Inflammation

Vaginal-InflammationThe proper term for vaginal inflammation is vaginitis.  It’s an uncomfortable condition that can be caused by a number of things, including bacteria, fungi, parasites, chemical irritation, or hormonal changes.

Yeast infections
One common cause of vaginal inflammation is a yeast infection.  Yeast infections themselves are pretty common; around 75% of women will develop one at some point in their life.  A yeast infection is a result of an overgrowth of the fungus Candida.  This fungus is normally present in the vagina, but a change in vaginal conditions can result it in growing too much.  Other symptoms of a yeast infection include a white, cottage cheese-like discharge, and irritation like itching and burning.

Bacterial vaginosis
Like yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of something that’s naturally found in the vagina.  In this case, it’s the bacterium Gardnerella.  Bacterial infections can also cause inflammation.  The most common and recognizable symptom of bacterial vaginosis is a bad vaginal odor associated with grayish-clear discharge.

Trichomoniasis
This infection is caused by a parasite that’s spread through sexual activity.  Vaginal inflammation can come as a result of this.  Trichomoniasis usually causes discharge that’s frothy and yellow or greenish-gray.  Since trichomoniasis is technically an STD, it should be treated as soon as possible to avoid further complications.

Atrophic vaginitis
This condition is associated with a change in hormones, leading to a change in the acidic levels of the vagina.  With less acidic conditions, healthy bacteria may be outgrown by harmful bacteria.  This doesn’t cause an infection by itself, but it does make the vagina more susceptible to infections, as well as injury.  Some women have no symptoms with atrophic vaginitis, while others have symptoms like itching, burning, and of course, vaginal inflammation.  This condition usually occurs in women who have already gone through menopause, but can sometimes affect breastfeeding mothers or girls before they go through puberty.

What should I do about vaginitis?
When the cause of vaginitis is treated, the inflammation should go away.  So will all the other unpleasant symptoms like irritation and odor.  There are home remedies as well as prescription treatments for the infections and diseases that can lead to vaginitis.  You should always go to a doctor for a diagnosis before you start trying to treat anything.  Although it can be embarrassing to see a doctor about vaginal problems, remember they’ve seen it all, and the sooner you get treatment, the sooner you can get back to feeling fresh and healthy.
